From the recording Over the Hills
The final chapter of the album’s story concerns the Battle of Vitoria in 1813, when the French were finally driven out of Spain. Towering melodies create a sense of triumph and melancholy befitting the battle that marked the beginning of the end of a long and bitter war.
Lyrics
And so it’s come to this
The French have made a stand
The time has finally come
To drive them out of Spanish land
Resistance will be fierce
Attack them on four fronts
The heart of every man
Is where the battle’s lost or won
The road has been long
There’s a long road to come
We’ve come through the fire
Now the end has begun
Vitoria, from the river to the heights
Show to them no fear and we will never be denied
Vitoria, from the river to the heights
The tide cannot be turned, they know the end is now in sight
Artillery unleashed
One hundred fifty guns
Into this firestorm
The Allied soldiers marching on
Across the bridges charge
Into the killing field
Though comrades fall around them
They have come too far to yield
March on, March on
You know they’ll not stand
Into the hills
Drive them out of this land
March on, March on,
Your courage is true
The gold of an empire
Is waiting for you
